Sometimes the Best Ideas Come From Real Life

When we first built Ref Marty, the system was simple.

A verbal warning.

Green.

Yellow.

Red.

On paper, it made perfect sense.

As we began using the app during beta testing, we quickly realized something was missing.

Not every situation needed another warning.

But not every situation deserved a Red Card either.

There needed to be something in between.

A chance to pause.

A chance to calm down.

A chance to try again.

That’s when the Blue Card was born.

Unlike the other cards, the Blue Card wasn’t designed as a reward or a consequence.

It became a reset.

Instead of escalating a situation, it encouraged everyone to slow down. Children had an opportunity to complete the requested task, regulate their emotions, or simply take a short break before moving forward.

The addition of a customizable countdown timer made the Blue Card even more effective.

Every family works differently.

Some children may only need thirty seconds.

Others may benefit from a few minutes.

Rather than deciding that for you, Ref Marty lets parents choose the amount of time that makes sense for their family.

Looking back, the Blue Card completely changed the flow of the app.

Instead of feeling like each step became increasingly negative, the Blue Card added a moment of encouragement.

It reminded us that parenting isn’t always about consequences.

Sometimes it’s simply about giving children the opportunity to reset and succeed.

Ironically, one of Ref Marty’s most popular features wasn’t part of the original design at all.

It came directly from listening, observing, and improving through real-world testing.

That’s exactly why beta testing matters.

Sometimes the best solution isn’t another consequence—it’s giving a child the opportunity to reset and make a better choice.
