That simple idea is where Ref Marty began.
As a soccer fan, I’ve always been fascinated by how a referee can communicate so much with something as simple as a colored card. Players immediately understand what the color means without a long explanation.
It made me wonder…
What if parenting could work the same way?
Instead of repeating instructions or raising our voices, what if expectations could be communicated with a simple visual cue that children quickly learn to recognize?
That question became the first version of Ref Marty.
The app isn’t designed to replace parenting. It isn’t meant to tell you how to raise your child. It’s simply a communication tool.
Ref Marty gives parents a familiar set of visual cards—Verbal Warning, Green, Yellow, Blue, and Red—along with optional countdown timers that help children understand what comes next.
Every family is different.

That’s why Ref Marty doesn’t decide what consequences or rewards should be. You do.
Our goal has never been to create another complicated parenting app. We wanted to build something that could be opened in seconds, used in the moment, and then put away just as quickly.

They help you communicate, then get out of the way.
As we began testing Ref Marty with our own family, something interesting happened. We discovered that the biggest lessons weren’t found in the code—they came from real-life moments we never expected.
Those experiences became the inspiration for The Play Book.
