Our First Beta Test
Building an app is one thing.
Finding out whether it actually works is something completely different.
Once the first version of Ref Marty was running, it was time for the part that mattered most—using it in real life.
We didn’t begin by looking for software bugs.
We wanted to answer a much more important question:
Would a child understand the cards without needing a long explanation?
That became the focus of our first beta test.
Rather than introducing an entirely new system, we leaned on something that already exists in one of the world’s most popular sports. Green, yellow, and red cards already carry meaning. We simply adapted that familiar progression into a communication tool designed for everyday parenting.
The goal wasn’t to punish.
The goal was clarity.
During those first few days, something became obvious almost immediately.
The less we talked, the better the cards worked.
Instead of repeating the same instruction several times, we could simply present the appropriate card and allow it to communicate the expectation. Conversations became shorter, emotions stayed lower, and everyone understood what was happening.
That didn’t mean every situation was perfect.
Like any new routine, there was a learning curve. Some moments worked exactly as we hoped. Others showed us where the system needed improvement.
Those moments turned out to be just as valuable.
Each interaction helped us refine both the app and the way we used it. Features that seemed important while designing the app became less important in practice, while other ideas quickly moved to the top of our development list.
The first beta test wasn’t about proving Ref Marty was finished.
It proved Ref Marty had potential.
And it gave us something even more valuable than positive results.
It gave us direction.
Many of the features you’ll read about throughout The Play Book—including the Blue Card and customizable countdown timers—were inspired directly by what we observed during these first real-world tests.
Building software is easy compared to building something families genuinely want to use.
That’s why every improvement to Ref Marty starts the same way.
By putting it back on the field.
